Custom Welding
Somewhat unrelated to wood, but a significant part of my life since I was twelve, welding and machining of custom jobs is still alive and well at my shop. From aesthetic architectural jobs to service machinery drives, tackling tough and unusual jobs is a normal undertaking for me. My background
in this area has also enabled me to repair and improve my own equipment as well and build new custom machinery for wood processing. To create an interesting combination, several customers have requested contemporary stainless steel legs to go with my rustic one-piece slab table tops. |

Kiln Drying
Both my wood and customer wood is kiln dried in one of two of my dehumidification kilns. Each kiln was custom built and holds 1100 and 1800 board feet respectively. The rule of thumb for drying time is: one month per inch of thickness kiln dry, one year per inch of thickness air dry.
I take great care in preparing a load for kiln drying. Complete even layers, equal air flow, and conservative water removal rates are all important
factors in proper drying of wood. Since most of the wood that goes thru my kilns have knots and other characteristics, I run reduced water removal schedules to keep boards flatter with less stress. This basis for quality drying– not quantity drying–has provided customers with stable, good looking boards
since 2001. |
